Here&#8217;s the actual picture.<\/p>\n<h2>Who can enter Japan visa-free<\/h2>\n<p>Japan currently maintains visa-exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions, covering most of Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and several Asia-Pacific nations, including South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. If your country is on that list, you can enter Japan for tourism without applying for anything in advance \u2014 you&#8217;ll simply get an entry stamp at immigration.<\/p>\n<p>The length of stay you&#8217;re granted depends on your nationality, not a single blanket rule:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>90 days<\/strong> \u2014 the large majority of visa-exempt countries, including the US, UK, most of the EU, Canada, and Australia<\/li>\n<li><strong>30 days<\/strong> \u2014 Brunei and Qatar<\/li>\n<li><strong>15 days<\/strong> \u2014 Indonesia and Thailand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If your country isn&#8217;t on Japan&#8217;s visa-exemption list, you&#8217;ll need to apply for a visa in advance through a Japanese embassy or consulate before you travel \u2014 that process is outside the scope of this article, since requirements vary meaningfully by nationality and purpose of visit; your nearest Japanese embassy&#8217;s website is the accurate source for that specific application.<\/p>\n<h2>What immigration can still ask for, even visa-free<\/h2>\n<p>Visa-free doesn&#8217;t mean automatic entry. A Japanese immigration officer has discretion to deny entry if you can&#8217;t reasonably demonstrate the trip is genuinely short-term tourism. In practice, that means it&#8217;s worth being able to show, if asked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A return or onward flight ticket<\/li>\n<li>Proof of accommodation for your stay<\/li>\n<li>Evidence of sufficient funds for the trip<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most visitors are never asked for any of this. It&#8217;s still worth having a screenshot of your hotel booking and return flight accessible on your phone, just in case.<\/p>\n<h2>The change coming: JESTA<\/h2>\n<p>This is worth knowing now specifically because it will eventually apply to exactly the travelers who currently enter visa-free. Japan&#8217;s government approved a new pre-travel electronic authorization system called JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) in March 2026 \u2014 functionally similar to the US ESTA or Canada&#8217;s eTA. Once it launches, visitors from the current visa-exempt countries will need to apply online and get approved before boarding their flight, rather than simply arriving and getting a stamp.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is not required yet.<\/strong> The rollout is scheduled for Japan&#8217;s 2028 fiscal year (roughly April 2028\u2013March 2029) \u2014 originally planned for 2030, then accelerated. If you&#8217;re traveling to Japan any time before that window opens, none of this applies to you yet.
