That’s a genuinely reasonable default \u2014 but it quietly assumes you’re only thinking about one part of the country. Thailand’s two coastlines run on close to opposite monsoon cycles, which means the honest answer is “it depends which coast,” and getting that backwards is the single most avoidable planning mistake in a Thailand trip.<\/p>\n
This window is when the northeast monsoon brings cooler, drier air across most of the country \u2014 Bangkok is comfortable rather than oppressive, both coasts are broadly in good shape, and it’s understandably the most popular and most crowded stretch of the year as a result. If you only remember one window, this is it.<\/p>\n
The west coast follows a fairly clean single dry season running from roughly mid-November through April, with the wet season (driven by the southwest monsoon) picking up from May through October. Outside the dry season, expect short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than constant rain \u2014 often still swimmable weather between showers, just less reliable for multi-day beach planning.<\/p>\n
This is the detail most generic Thailand advice misses entirely: the Gulf side runs on a meaningfully different cycle than the Andaman side, staying good well into a period \u2014 April through June \u2014 when the west coast is already turning wet. If your dates fall in a month that looks wrong for Phuket, that’s often exactly the signal to look at Koh Samui instead rather than assume the whole country is off-limits.<\/p>\n
The north largely follows the same November\u2013February sweet spot as the rest of the country, with genuinely pleasant, cool-by-Thai-standards weather. The one specific thing worth knowing: burning season, roughly February through April, when agricultural burning across the region pushes air quality noticeably down \u2014 Chiang Mai’s air quality index regularly climbs into unhealthy territory through March and early April. If Chiang Mai is a priority stop and you have flexibility, favor December through January over March.<\/p>\n
July through October is peak rainy season nationwide, and it’s also the cheapest and least crowded stretch of the year for exactly that reason. It’s not usually the trip-ruining monsoon some people picture \u2014 most days bring an intense but short downpour rather than all-day rain \u2014 but it does mean less predictable outdoor plans and a real chance of a washed-out day here and there. Worth considering deliberately if budget and crowds matter more than guaranteed sunshine, not just defaulted into by accident.<\/p>\n
