Greece’s seasonal calendar isn’t just about weather — it’s about whether the ferries you’re planning to depend on are actually running at full schedule, and how rough the crossing might be if they are. Get the timing right and island-hopping is effortless; get it wrong and you’re either fighting Meltemi winds or discovering your route doesn’t operate that month at all.
The gold standard: June and September
Both months deliver close to ideal conditions: hot but not extreme temperatures, sea temperatures around 22–24°C, full ferry schedules, and — critically — crowds that are building or thinning rather than at their August peak. If you can only target one window, this is the strongest case on the calendar, and September specifically edges out June for slightly lower prices as the summer rush recedes.
Peak summer (July–August): the Meltemi window
This is peak season for a reason — full sun, warm seas, every taverna and business open — and also when the Meltemi, the Aegean’s strong seasonal northern wind, blows hardest, particularly in late July and August with sustained winds of 25–35 knots. It’s not dangerous to a well-prepared trip, but it does mean a real chance of a cancelled high-speed ferry crossing, more so than the larger, slower conventional ferries. August specifically is also when Greek families take their own summer holidays en masse, pushing the Cyclades to their most crowded and expensive point of the year.
Shoulder season (late May, late September–October): the value play
Late May and late September into October offer nearly the same ferry reliability and warm weather as the June/September peak, with noticeably lower prices and thinner crowds — worth strong consideration if flexibility on exact dates is available and value matters as much as guaranteed peak conditions.
Winter (November–March): mainland only, realistically
This is the one hard stop worth knowing clearly: inter-island ferry service drops sharply outside the roughly late-May-to-late-September window, and some Cyclades routes don’t run at all in winter. A Greece trip built around Athens and the mainland works fine year-round; an island-hopping trip planned for January is planning against a ferry schedule that may simply not exist for the route you want. If winter dates are fixed by other constraints, Athens, Crete (which keeps better winter connectivity than the smaller Cyclades), or the Ionian islands (naturally more sheltered from the Meltemi thanks to mainland mountain ranges) are more realistic than a Santorini-Mykonos hop.
